What to Do After an Auto Accident

Travel season is right around the corner. As your risk advisors, we are here to remind you to be safe on the road—and prepared for every scenario. If worst comes to worst and you are in a collision of any sort, make sure you know how to proceed.

Here are the key steps to take following an auto accident:

Move out of traffic, park your vehicle and turn off the engine.

Prevent further harm to yourself, your passengers and others on the road by pulling over to a safe location. Make sure your car is off before getting out.

Check that everyone involved is safe.

Confirm that everyone involved in the accident is not seriously injured. Call 911 if necessary, and err on the side of caution if you aren’t sure. If no one is seriously hurt, it’s still a good idea to contact the police right away to file a report.

Document the scene and collect info.

When everyone is safe and all emergencies are addressed, take photos of the damage to help the claims process go smoothly. Make sure to gather all contact, insurance and vehicle information, including:

  • Names and phone numbers of all parties, including any witnesses
  • Make, model and year for each vehicle involved
  • Driver’s license and plate numbers
  • Insurance information
  • Accident location
  • Police officer names and badge numbers
