Distracted Driving is Dangerous Driving

Hopefully someday soon, self-driving cars will be the reality science-fiction writers have predicted for decades, but until that day, we still need to resist distractions while driving.

Using your cellphone while driving, in any capacity, increases your chances of experiencing an auto accident exponentially. This is a statistically proven fact that most Americans are already aware of—and yet cellphones are involved in 1.6 million car crashes every year.

So why do people continue to let themselves be distracted while driving?

The truth is: if you’ve used your phone in the car for a long time, it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which something goes wrong. Consistency has a habit of tricking our brains into feeling invincible or unfailable, simply because we haven’t proved it wrong yet.

We all like to believe it will never be us on the side of the road, front bumper crunched against the guard rail like a soda can, but the reality is: it only takes one time to put your car, your passengers, and your life in danger.

All too often we see claims from good drivers sliding off roads or rear-ending other cars as a result of trying to juggle their phone and their car. Anything that takes your focus off the road has the potential to cause you or your vehicle harm.

If you need to take your attention off the road while driving, try these tactics to minimize risks:

  • If you need to make a phone call or respond to a text, pull over to the side of the road and park first.
  • Set your GPS before you leave for your destination, and if directions need to be changed, pull over into a parking lot before fiddling with your device.
  • Don’t let the pressure to be on time replace your common sense. Drive as slow as you need to, especially in inclement weather. Everyone else can wait. Speed and convenience are never worth your life or your car.

Don’t let distraction or inattention to your surroundings cost you more than your car. Even if it only costs you a higher premium on your insurance, is that really worth it?

At Warren Weiss, we want to look out for you as much as we look out for your car. Reduce risks with safe driving practices, and know that Warren Weiss Agency has always got your back.
